I'd like to talk about a detective series called The Harbour, which a colleague recommended to me last winter. It's a slow-burn crime drama set in a small fishing town, where a local journalist starts investigating a disappearance that everyone else has quietly agreed to forget. On the surface it's a mystery, but really it's about how a small community keeps its secrets, which is what makes it stand out from the usual crime shows. I watched it over about two weeks in January, mostly curled up on my sofa on those dark evenings when you don't want to go anywhere. I'd planned to ration it to one episode a night, but by the fourth episode that plan had completely collapsed and I stayed up far too late finishing the season. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes character-driven stories — people who enjoy figuring out who's lying rather than watching car chases. My mum, who normally hates crime dramas, ended up hooked as well, so it clearly travels beyond the usual audience. As for why I enjoyed it so much, I think it comes down to the writing. Every character, even the minor ones, has a believable reason for what they do, so the twists feel earned instead of random. The ending genuinely surprised me, and yet when I looked back, all the clues had been sitting there in plain sight. It's the only series I've finished and immediately wanted to rewatch, just to see what I'd missed the first time.
